Photography for Social Change, Fall 2015

The following images were drawn from the final portfolios in my Chaminade University class, Photography for Social Change, Spring 2015. The class is an introduction to photography with an emphasis on using the camera as an instrument to reveal social issues or to assist in seeking positive solutions to the problems which vex us all.

With this project I brought people to their favorite places and doing what they loved. I explored with vibrant photos and exposure along with an array of black and white photos that capture moments. Being able to capture more than just a person smiling was the purpose of this project and seeing people in their natural and comfortable environment. I wanted to also express what made people truly happy.

In my pictures, I want people to feel a sense of togetherness, happiness, love and human emotion. I feel my pictures are very rich with emotions and connections between people. I want people who see my pictures to see the world differently, and get a more realistic sense of what truly matters to us as people. I want to bring back more of the core values that i was raised with; taking care of each other, love, real emotions, and joy.

As a young female living in a society where I feel constantly judged and held to a certain standard to look and dress a certain way, I admit to being guilty of caring about what other people think and taking measures into my own hands to “fit in.” Body image and self-esteem is a huge and growing topic. Media advertisements that display gorgeous models, male and female, with unrealistic bodies, act as a mirror of what we will almost never see in ourselves. Adults to teens, to even young children, face these problems everyday and are tormented by their self-esteem. It is hard to face our self in the mirror and say, “I am beautiful.”

I was inspired to take photos of the Hobby shop ToyLynx because of my love for the game, the people, and the atmosphere. it’s a community in which I have spent countless hours meeting new people, making friends, and playing and trading cards. Modern day Trading Card Games, or TCG’s for short, have been around in America since the early 90’s. Their popularity has been growing ever since there creation and there are countless numbers of different TCG’s.

I was inspired to create a portfolio on the motion of basketball. Trying to capture basketball creates a lot of motion in a shot, which adds to the picture. I wanted to use basketball as a metaphor to life. Not only can motion blur add life but also motion blur can capture a person’s inner self. Some people just are naturally full of life and energy. By taking their self-portraits and adding motion blur can bring out their inner self and just make their portrait just that much better.

Art As Trash. Growing up in the generation that I am a part of brings along with it a lot of concern for the environment because in today’s society we are dealing with pollution, contamination in our atmospheres, climate change, the melting of the ice caps, and the list goes on and on. Thus when it came time to develop a theme for this portfolio the ideas that came flooding in all revolved around trash, garbage and the environment. Hopefully this portfolio will inspire others to be more creative with their trash and possibly find other uses for it other than simply throwing it away and forgetting about it.

Honolulu is a city that sleeps. I set out on a journey to capture the rather unique things that one may discover while traversing a city that goes completely still after 11PM. I did my best to capture the city of Honolulu through an insomniac’s eyes. This portfolio consists of all things that a person may take during the day, except this is at night where things have a much different feel.

I feel that we as human beings are unique, and we each have our own individual perspectives and views of the world. In this portfolio, I intend to use my perspective to create visually interesting images that represent my own unique ideas and worldview. My aim was to take pictures of things and places that had made impressions on me, and that helped to shape my perspective. I attempted to capture the essence of these things and places and my aim was to show the audience how I viewed these certain objects and locations.

I have chosen to pick my theme based on something that has significant meaning to me personally. I chose to name my portfolio Ohana and Traditions. These two elements I feel go hand in hand when it comes to culture. Family in Hawaiian is known as Ohana and is my source of love, motivation, and happiness. Ohana means more than just a family unit; Ohana is where each person learns to love and is able to be themselves and cultivate their own unique traditions in their family. More than just the people, Ohana is made up of many traditions, sacred to that particular family.

In my portfolio I hope to bring out the essence and beauty of the subject’s tattoo while also respecting its roots and meaning. People get tattoos for different reasons, whether it be for personal reasons to remember a loved one, or something spiritual that helps you bring you closer to your faith, or if you belong to a group and in order to show your commitment you must get a certain tattoo, or maybe you just thought it was a cool design and you wanted to have it. There are many reasons out there that people get tattoos and through my photography I want to tell their story behind it.

The theme of my portfolio in its broad sense is technology, but more specifically, the human aspect of technology. I wanted to display how today, everyone is on their phones—either to avoid talking to people or just going on because we are bored and have nothing better to do. With these pictures, I hope that the audience can see that we are living in a time where face-to-face conversations are now becoming “awkward” situations. I hope that these pictures can help the audience appreciate their surroundings as well as their company.

I was inspired to create a portfolio of the colors of life. I wanted to take pictures that would bring out the vibrant beauty of nature. Many people miss out on seeing all the liveliness of nature because they are too busy looking at their technology. If they just looked up and enjoyed the amazing views that are right in front of them. I want people to appreciate nature and the unique colors that all plants and animals possess.

I wanted to capture the insecurities our young women face from name-calling to stereotypes the society has put them through. I took the time to ask these young females what their biggest insecurities are or what they have been called that has affected their lives in ways that changed the way they dress or the changes in attitudes toward society. After talking to the girls we agreed to either have the words written on them or find a more creative way to portray their pain. I wanted to do this because I am also a victim of name calling and stereotypes.
